Lip lesions are a common problem and may be due to a variety of causes. In the vast majority of cases, they will improve over time if left untreated. However, some lip lesions remain or grow. Due to the clearly visible location of lip lesions, individuals commonly seek our expertise in removing them to improve cosmetic appearance.

Lip lesions may be the result of several processes including:

  • Mucous cysts;
  • Venous lakes;
  • Certain autoimmune diseases and
  • Malignancies (very rare).

Lip lesion removal surgery is essentially an operation to improve the cosmetic appearance of any of type of lip lesion. Sometimes, lip lesions may be painful or overly sensitive and lip lesion removal surgery is also indicated in these circumstances.

In circumstances of suspected malignancies, the lip lesion removal may also be aimed at extracting tissue in order to perform a biopsy to determine optimal further treatment options.

At a prior clinic appointment, our expert plastic surgeons will carefully listen to your concerns and examine the nature of the lip lesion in question. This will include the size, shape, orientation and location of the lesion. During the examination, the lesion will also be palpated and moved to determine how extensively connected to the normal lip tissue it may be.

In some cases, our plastic surgeons may recommend evaluation of the lip lesion with imaging to determine how extensive the lesion is and whether it may contain any blood vessels connected with other tissue in the lip and surrounding areas.

This extra care will enable the most appropriate surgical technique to be planned for you.

Depending on the exact nature of the lip lesion being removed, these procedures are normally performed under local anaesthetic rather than general anaesthesia.

Surgical removal of fibrous tissue is normally achieved by carefully excising the lesion in question with a scalpel and stitching the area in a way that leaves a far less visible mark. In other cases, such as when treating venous lakes, your surgeon may recommend removing the lesion with a laser. This targeted intervention will heat the blood vessels to a critical point to eliminate them.

Whether the lip lesion removal is achieved by excising the lesion or with laser therapy, the vast majority of lip lesions are able to be successfully removed resulting in a far better cosmetic appearance.
